Will the student experience be richer?

This is a false conflict between those who enjoy a new era of students as consumers and those who believe it would be a betrayal of the student experience, says Wendy Purcell

The White Paper, if adopted, disruption and change active sector of higher education forever. But change is for richer or poorer in terms of student experience and quality?

If we take literally the statement by the newspaper about placing "students in the heart of the system", we are asked to see them simply as consumers, interact with suppliers in a single consumption "Now I teach, teach me and teach me quick cheap" transaction? Is it a vision for the sector?

students are much more than passive consumers, price-sensitive than the title of a course focused solely on obtaining a piece of paper and does not care about the return on your investment. In fact, are active partners in learning, deeply interested in the quality and richness of experience. They want to be ready for the unknown demands of tomorrow's world.

interruption can stimulate innovation and diversity. But do not claim that apples are the same as oranges simply because they are both fruit.

We know from our research at the University of Plymouth, while the interest of students is to first choose the courses they want, this is closely followed by his attention to quality and experience of teachers, employability skills and graduate prospects.

The call for more information so that students are welcome. But to stimulate growth at low cost prices to the detriment of the quality of the service will be short term. It will create long-term damage to our industry that is the envy of the world.

The decision to save £ 3,000,000,000 puts extra pressure on the student loan portfolio increased from £ 33 to £ 80 billion. Conduct of private providers and FE colleges to provide low-cost, high efficiency, seems to be an extreme form of encouraging industry to put the student in his heart. It does not seem sustainable. This "high pile'em" model can be cheaper in price. But it is also cheap in terms of quality?

There is room in the industry for many types of outreach, training just in time and centers of competence and professional provider of vocational training. But there is also space for universities, especially those closely connected to their communities, to provide high quality research informed teaching.
Plymouth, students participate actively in the learning process and are empowered to become their best. They deserve a few rich and full of opportunities that challenge them, help them develop their talents to match what the best employers require, and help them become responsible citizens and informed. Our agenda for the company encourages students to be creative, provide equipment and solutions to apply their knowledge to help the community, either through volunteering or supporting social enterprises.
